About the Artist:
I began making art when I was a young teen, making large mosaics and was primarily self-taught. I took art classes in high school and started doing make-up
and props for the school plays.
In the 1960s I went to beauty school and spent a short and unsuccessful time doing hair. Though I was not successful as a hairdresser, the elements of
style I garnered in that profession have strongly asserted themselves on my work today. One can see my use of rope and other mediums to create effects of
hair and cascading curls. I see each piece as a small set or float on which I embellish a theme. The faces are interesting, but secondary to the headdresses.
I have had exhibits in Los Angeles and Palm Springs over the past 27 years. In that period of time I took a side route and created a line of earrings and
face pins which sold out of a New York showroom. The face pins were made of Fimo clay and had rhinestone eyes, various kinds of hair, jewels and were the
original source for the masks which I have been working on for the past 7 or 8 years. The collection presented at Images by Gideon Fine Art Gallery is all
new works dating from late 2008 and early 2009.
Artist's Statement:
My masks are a melding of Carmen Miranda meets a Rose Parade float without drugs. They call what I do, found object art. I see them as decorative objects
with a viable market value. The masks are an outcropping of the paintings and sculptures I had been creating for several decades. This body of work is part
of a collection of 25 pieces I've worked on for the past year. I see them as fun. I try to make each one different and interesting to create so that I keep
my mind fertile.
